About Death Note
The Story is pretty simple. To sum it all up its basically:
Good versus Evil
"God" versus the Detective
god being evil and the detectives being good
The story begins with boredom, yes thats right Death Notes don't kill people boredom kills people.
Ryuuk the Shinigami (God of Death) is bored so he steals a Death Note and throws is down to the human world. Raito Yagami is also bored so he picks up the Death Note that just happened to fall out of the sky. After reading the rules he just laughs it off as a joke until he tests it out and trys killing people. Unfortunately for the criminals of the world it works, so Raito goes on a wonderful killing spree of cleansing the world. Now after tons of criminals dying people start to notice. Raito got the name "Kira" or "Killer" some people support Kira and his doing while others want to stop him. This is where the coolest character L steps in play. (Yes his name is the letter L) He is known as the best detective in the world. And he believes that Kira is as bad as the criminals he is killing. L pledges to take Kira down, and Raito of course pledges to take down L. So that is when the battle of the genius minds start. And basically that is the super short summary. Kira VS L (and their minions.)

This of course doesn't do any justice to the series. Actually this has to be the worst summary for Death Note ever made. I should write my own name down in the Death Note just for writing this summary. But I'm lazy if you want a real summary go here:

Please know that Death Note is the best manga/anime out there so you should go and buy all 12/13 volumes of manga and download all the episodes and read/watch the series right now.
Oh there is also two live action movies but I didn't really like them as much as the manga and the anime but they are decent.
